Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His being was unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His main role was to look after his herd of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind among the solo tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day upon day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
But, there were at website times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
